In response to the World Day for Safety and Health at Workplaces (28/4)

Workshop on safely culture al workplaces

Bureau for Safe Work
02:20' PM - Wednesday, 20/09/2006

In response to the World day for Safety and Health at the work places (April 28,h) and incommemoration of the International Labour Day (May 1st), on April 28th 2005, Bureau for Safe Work and the ILO Office in Hanoi organised the workshop "Safety Culture at the Workplace" in Hanoi. Nearly 50 participants from different Ministries, branches, enterprises, and international organisations attended the workshop.

Recent years have shown a poor awareness by both employers and employees of the OSH regulations, resulting in the main cause of occupational accidents and diseases. Moreover, the compliance with safety techniques processes have not been implemented as many work places. The core objectives of the workshop" Safety culture at the workplace" is to help employers, employees and OSH state administration agencies to have a full understanding of the concept and necessity for developing a safety culture at work in order to min imize occupational accidents and diseases and improve the working conditions.

What is safety culture at the workplace? How to develop and promote safety culture at work places in Vietnam? These questions have been the main content for discussion. National and in ternational experts talked about basic points of the theme and exchanged views and experience on developing and maintaining a safety culture at work. Most of the participants believed that the national program on labour protection should create a frame work for the tripartite collaboration in OSH activities at all lev els. Vietnamese enterprises should attach great importance to safety culture in the context of international integration process, because OSH compliance is a strategy to increase and sustain competitiveness.

As planned, after the work shop an Action Plan for Safety Culture at Work will be developed, in addition to pilot activi ties conducted in some enterprises on a voluntary basis.
