News - Events | Workshop on OSH in small construction sites | | Bureau for Safe Work |
08:38' AM - Friday, 15/09/2006 | | During 2 days, 27-28 Nov.2003, in Ha Noi, with the support of ILO/KOREA, the International Labour Organization (ILO) in co-operation with the Ministry of Labour-Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) conducted the workshop on OSH in small construction sites with participants from Korea, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Hong Kong SAR, Vietnam and ILO
Construction is one of the highest hazards and risks industries. Occupational accidents in small construction sites at the present are not only headache trouble of Vietnam but also of other countries. It is very difficult to control OSH in small construction sites due to its nature that most of workers are self – employers, who work seasonally and mobilly with unawareness of OSH.
Statistics in 3 consecutive years, from 2000 to 2002, showed that the number of occupational accidents of construction industry was always 2 times higher than that of electricity or mining industries. Results of survey in Oct. 2003 by MOLISA showed that nearly 84% of the workforce in small construction sites were leisure farmers; 90% of the workforce were untrained on OSH; 100% of small construction sites had hazards such as falling objects, broken scaffolds and tumbles.
The workshop was a good opportunity for participants to learn and share experience and find out solutions to deal with the raised issues, of which the emphasized one needs to be given priority that was the enhancement of OSH awareness for employees and self-employers in order to set up legal framework on OSH supervision and inspection in small construction sites in the future.
