After participating in the training course for trainers on occupational safety and health in agriculture (from 13 to 17 September 2004) in Can Tho, the support committees to project RAS/04/M01/JPN in provinces of Ha Nam, Nghe An, Can Tho and Hau Giang could improve their teaching skills, general knowledge of occupational safety and health in agriculture. On that basis, the first 4 pilot training courses conducted by these trainers were organised in Ha Nam, Nghe An, Can Tho and Hau Giang. Local officers and farmers were the course trainees, who then become volunteers to disseminate good experience in and initiatives of working and living condition improvement for the locals

With the action-oriented methods, trainees can do field visit, assess the working conditions at each family, and later give simple but very useful advice to ensure safety. After the pilot training course (from 20 to 22 September 2004), trainees proposed 40 points of the working conditions to be improved including 25 short-term improvement proposals and 15 long-term improvement proposals in 10 families in Co Do village, Thoi Hung district.

After that, the training course in Kim Bang district of Ha Nam province which was organised for 2 days (from 19 to 20 October 2004) assessed by ILO experts as one of the best organised training courses compared to those in Thailand, India, the Philippines. 30 participants taking part in the course proposed around 150 initiatives to improve the working and living conditions. These initiatives focused on helping farmers themselves improve the living environment, safely store and use pesticides, suitable design of working tables, ensuring essential welfare facilities to enhance farmers’ health…

By the end of 2004, the project support committees in Ha Nam, Nghe An, Hau Giang and Can Tho held 8 successful training courses on OSH in agriculture.
