08:26' AM - Friday, 15/09/2006 | | Nearly 70% of agricultural female labors exposed to pesticide in spraying had poisoned symptoms by pesticides, 10% of which suffered miscarriages. There was high accidents rate in agricultural female: 130 cases per 10,000 people, 58% of which were occupational accidents. Nearly 90% of woman workers were not provided health examinations, 35% suffered from respiratory diseases and gynaecology. Working environment in village enterprises was really poor with dust content accounting for 4 to 5 times higher than exposed limits (ELs), respectively concentration of toxic vapors or gases were from 2 to 3.5 times higher than ELs, particularly 36 times higher than ELs. Typically, a selenium poisoning, which happened in Van Mon commune of Bac Ninh province in the end of 2003, made 38 people hospitalized, and most of victims were women and children.
These statistics, which were quoted from the results of the survey conducted under the Project on Protection of Women’s health in agricultural sector and village enterprises by the Department of Preventive Health under Ministry of Health in 2000, showed the hardworking and the disadvantages suffered by women living on agriculture and in village enterprises.
