Present at the ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, Madam Nguyen Thi Hang, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs - Head of national steering committee for the event; Madam Cu Thi Hau, Chairperson of the Viet nam General Confederation of Labour; Mr. Nguyen Van Quynh, provincial committee secretary of Quang Ninh; Mr. Vu Nguyen Nhiem, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ninh; representatives of the ILO; international delegations from Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Germany, Japan, South Korea; more than 400 delegates who were leaders, OSH officers, trade union members from dif ferent Ministries, industries and enterprises and more than 3,000 workers, farmers and students from Ha Long city. The television of Quang Ninh were able to deliver a live broadcast of the event.
On behalf of the government, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem launched the 7th National Week on OSH and Fire Prevention, to highlight the importance of OSH issues for both employers and employees and to emphasise their respon sibilities to improve working conditions, and prevent occupational accidents and diseases and fires. The national week was the initial activity to implement the 2005 action plan to develop a sustainable occupational safety culture at the workplace.

On behalf of the Internation· al Labour Organisation (ILO), Ms. RoseMarie Greve, Director of the ILO Office in Hanoi, spoke of her appreciation for the Vietnamese government in ensuring OSH standards for workers at the workplaces, particularly for coalmining, construction, agriculture, small and medium enterprises, and handicraft villages. She also reaffirmed the ILO's commitment to cooperating and assisting competent authorities of Vietnam in activities to raise the awareness of employers and employees, especially in the ag ricultural sector.
Mr. Le Dinh Truong, Direc tor of Cao Son coal company (af· filiation of Vinacoal) represent ed enterprises in Quang Ninh province, gave a brief speech de livering support and committment to OSH compliance.
At the ceremony there was an award delivery session by the Government, by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Af fairs, by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour for some teams and individuals in OSH field. Ms. Rose-Marie Greve was given an award by Madam Nguyen Thi Hang, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, for her practical contribution to the branch of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs of Vietnam.

Twenty-three decorated vehicles with banners and symbols represen tating the different organizations and enterprises in Quang Ninh province participated in a parade after the ceremony.
An exhibition of images of OSH and fire prevention activities, equipment as well as technical reports of OSH research took place from 20 to 23 March 2005, at Viet- Nhat cultur al centre in Ha Long city. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, Minister of Labour, Invalids and So cial Affairs, Chairperson of the Viet nam General Confederation, leader ship of the Quang Ninh People's Committee cut the inauguration band. Leaders of the Ministry, branch, provinces, enterprises, international guests and Quang Ninh workforce visited examples of stores of products and labour protection equipment of Ministry of Labour, Invalids and So cial Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Public Security, Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, Viet nam Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and the Vinacoal.
A highlight of the week was the Vinacoal's mine rescue demonstration in cases of pit explosion and fire and the Quang Ninh Fire Prevention Police Division's demonstation offire fighting in high buildings. These are the common occurrences of coal production process and everyday life, threatening the lives and properties of millions of workers. Government officials and the former Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Khanh participated in these activities.
The National Steering Commit tee visited and presented gifts to some local families who were victims of workplace accidents or illness, which provided a timely reminder that OSH is everyone's responsibility. |
