6th National Safety and Health and Fire-Explosion Prevention Week in Can Tho

The launching ceremony of the 6th national safety and fire-explosion prevention week titled “Improving working conditions in small and medium enterprises, in handicraft villages and in agriculture for workers’ safety and health” was held successfully in Can Tho City on March 14-20, 2004. This was an important and socio-economically significant event annually launched by the Prime Minister.

* Meeting and Demonstration

In the morning of 14th March 2004, the launching ceremony of the sixth national week for OSH and Fire-explosion Prevention held solemnly in Can Tho City. Mr. Nguyen Phuc Thanh – Vice Chairman of National Assembly, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Hang, Head of NA’s Committee of Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu and more than 400 participants from ministries, industries, localities and organizations representative for employers and employees attended the event. The launching ceremony, which was broadcasted lively by Can Tho Television Station, was also attended by delegates from Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, China, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Germany and the International Labour Organization, over 5,500 local workers and farmers.

On behalf of the Steering Committee of the National Safety Week, Minister Nguyen Thi Hang launched the week, praised organizations and individuals who had made excellent achievements in ensuring OSH, and called levels, industries, socio-political organizations, trade unions, business and production establishments and workers for implementing practical and effective activities aiming to minimize physical and mental damages from occupational accidents and diseases.

The ILO representative, Ms. Rose Marie Greve, Director of ILO Hanoi Office, highly appreciated the Vietnamese Government's concern over ensuring safety and health for workers at workplace, particularly at small and medium enterprises, in handicraft villages and in agriculture. These are also the ILO's concerned fields. She also pledged to support relevant agencies to raise awareness among employers and employees, especially in agriculture in rural areas.

* The exhibition on Activities, Equipment of OSH and Fire-Explosion Prevention and Achievements in Labour Protection was held at Children Cultural House in Can Tho City on March 14-20, 2004. 44 enterprises showcased their activities and achievements at 54 pavilions, attracting a huge number of visitors, ranging from local leaders to international experts, workers, pupils and students.

* Meeting with victims of occupational accidents and occupational patients: 14 families of occupational accident victims in the city were given presents. Meetings took place right at the enterprises that saw occupational accidents, aiming to remind workers, employers of their consciousness and responsibility for ensuring safety and health to safeguard their life.

* Competition of OSH officers: the final round of the fourth competition of OSH officers took place on 14 March at Can Tho Cultural Center on the occasion of the 6th national week for OSH and fire-explosion prevention. This was annual competition launched by the local Federation of Labour with the aim to encourage learning about OSH knowledge and competitions in business and production establishments in the city. The first prize belonged to Seafood Company No 404, followed by Hau Giang Pharmaceuticals Enterprise and Southwestern Petroleum Company.
