The report of implementation of model for prevention of occupational blood borne diseases for health care worker in Thua Thien Hue province

I. RATIONAL

Thua Thien Hue Province has seven districts, one town and one city. The province is well-known as a place with potential in tourism, many sights-seeing and health center of the central part of Vietnam. There are several hospitals with the total of 2500 health care workers (HCWs).

The HCWs contribute significantly to the people health protection. Health care is a specific career with high stress. The HCWs have direct contacts with patients and join to deal with infectious diseases cases, especially blood transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis etc. Besides, HCWs are exposure to many chemicals, radioactivity in the hospital as well as in health care facilities.

The occupational safety and health (OSH) for HCWs have not been properly paid attention to. Therefore, the deployment of caring and improving health and occupational conditions and of preventing occupational diseases for HCWs in Thua Thien Hue province is indispensable.

II. CONTENT

1. Project title: Workers Health Protection in stage of 2009-2011.

3. Activity code:

4. Title of activity: Implementation of occupational blood borne diseases prevention model for HCWs in Thua Thien Hue province.

5. Objectives:

§ To evaluate occupational risk factors causing blood transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B in six district hospitals

§ To raise the awareness, attitude and practice of HCWs to prevent blood transmitted diseases at workplace.

§ To apply appropriate solutions to prevent sharp injury and occupational Hepatitis B

6. Subjects:

- HCWs who have contact with the patients or blood/blood production and juices of excreta.

- HCWs who regularly use and treat the interjection needles, contaminated surgical devices; health care works, technicians.

- HCWs who have contacts with the patients’ waste.

7. Duration for implementation: July 2010 to March 2011.

8. Places: 6 district hospitals in Thua Thien Hue Province.

- Huong Thuy Town

- Quang Dien District

- Huong Tra District

- Phu Loc District

- Nam Dong District

- A Luoi District

9. Budget: Funded by Workers Health Protection Project in stage of 2009-2011.

III. RESULTS

3.1. Baseline survey from 24 to 30 September 2010.

3.1.1. General situation:

Thua Thien Hue Province has the area of 5.053,99 km2­, with the population of more than 1.105.500 people. The Province has 2,500 health workers. The health facilities include Hue Central Hospital and provincial hospitals specialized on:

+ Traditional Medicine.

+ Odonto-Stomatology

+ Ophthalmology

+ Mental hospital.

+ Sanitaria and rehabilitation

- 09 district hospitals.

- Private hospitals.
